Top Tips for Listing New Products

You've made fabulous products but with selling online, their sales will depend entirely on how well they are listed.  If you want to dig in and understand fully why that is the case then grab a coffee and view our webinar here.

Here's our quick guide to 4 of the most important things to tick off when listing your products.

1. Optimised Product Titles

  • Keep them clear and descriptive of what the product is. By all means use your own unique product names to standout but do make sure buyers know immediately what it is, so supplement with some descriptive words too.
  • Include the most important search term (keyword) for your product that customers will use to find products like it.
  • Front load the most important keywords in the first 50 characters - so buyers instantly understand what your product is and that it matches what they are looking for.   If your product is targeting a particular gifting occasion (e.g. Father's Day then put that at the front of the title). If your product is addressing a dietary need such as Dairy Free Chocolate then that needs to be stated upfront.
  • Then, add key details like size/ quantity. If you are selling something in quantity or for a particular size then also add that product detail after the descriptive part of the title, because it provides important context for customers when comparing your listing and prices to others that they see in the category page or search results they are looking at. E.g. "Box of 12" or "500ml"
  • Additional key attributes? Optional and not always needed, but if your product has some additional strong unique attributes (selling points) really worth highlighting in the title to help generate more clicks (and appearances in relevant searches) then add those in at the end.
  • Scannable structure. If you have a title that is longer than a few words once you have the descriptive part, then the details and then perhaps some added attributes; use hyphens to separate the distinct parts of the title to make it very easy to read.

2. High Quality Main Product Images

The choice of main image on your listing is absolutely key to maximise your views and therefore your sales.

Here are the must-haves:

  • The majority of the shot (80%+) should be the product you are selling. Crop tightly.
  • It should be instantly recognisable what the product is, and that it matches the expectations of the listing title.  For example if you are selling a box of 6 doughnuts show clearly a box of 6 doughnuts.
  • Keep additions in the shot like accessories to a minimum, they should not distract from the main focus on the product.
  • Light backgrounds consistently perform better.
  • No graphics or text overlays.

3. Complete & Structured Descriptions

The description is where the dance is done, so don't scrimp on this key part! Follow this 3 part structure:

  • Strong opening sentence or two about what the item is (repeat keywords) and why it is special, and what it is for (if needed spelling out).
  • Then provide clarity on exactly what you get (quantity, size, options etc)
  • Then cover any likely buyer FAQs  - always state Shelf Life & Storage info for perishable items

Make it compelling and easy to read - use short paragraphs.

4. Add more photos!

Listings with multiple images consistently convert higher. Show the customers as much as you can about your product, including how it comes packaged (very important for gifting items) and also how it can be used/ enjoyed.
